Synopsis

Whistle is the final volume of James Jones' great war trilogy, a project that obsessed him ever since he first conceived it at the end of World War II. Thirty years in the writing, it is the story of four men who can no longer stand being witnesses to “all the anguish and mayhem and blood and suffering.” Nor can they turn their backs on it and forget what happened. It is a bleak tale, but one that must be told.

About the Author

Author of the critically acclaimed international bestseller, From Here to Eternity (1951), and recipient of the National Book Award, James Jones (1921-1977) is known primarily as the author of novels which probe the effects of war on the individual soldier. Born in the small town of Robinson, Illinois, Jones served in the US Army from 1939 to 1944 where he witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As a member of the 27th US Infantry Regiment (25th Division), Jones was wounded at Guadalcanal, spent eight months recuperating in an Army hospital, and was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge from the Army in 1944, Jones returned to Illinois where he not only began to write about his war-related experiences, but assisted in the creation of the Handy Writers' Colony in Marshall, Illinois.

Other works by Jones include: From Here to Eternity, Some Came Running, The Pistol, The Thin Red Line, Go to the Widow-Maker, The Merry Month of May, Viet Journal, World War II, and A Touch of Danger.
