The Garden Serenade Stein
Dating
back approximately 12,000 years, the history of Japanese ceramics, heavily
influenced by Chinese and Korean masters, is one of artistry in combination with
practicality. Renowned the world over and much copied, the work of Japanese
artisans not only bespeak millennia of tradition, culture, and knowledge, but an
excellence achievable only when those most basic of elements—earth and
fire—are fused, formed, and fashioned by the skilled hands of wisdom and
experience.
This lovely ceramic stein portrays, via raised patterns,
a Japanese couple standing side-by-side in, what one may presume to be, their
garden.
|
The blending of the bold and vibrant with the
subdued shades, tones, and hues of pastels results in a work that is both
striking and serene. The colors sharply contrast, yet, achieve a
balance, a concordance, that attracts the eye and, thereby, the imagination to
the scene that the artist has so tenderly
rendered.1
Upon viewing the artist's depiction, one might
well envisage that it was a history, not unlike the one which follows, that
served to inspire our gifted artisan's imagination.
“Compassed by the splendor of God's
creation and moved by a heart suffused with the love and adoration of she who
bides at his side, a Japanese gentleman, knowing that the leaden monotones of
discourse—however infused with passion—will fail to convey the heat
of that fire by which he is consumed, the variegated colors of its flames, and
the depth of his devotion, blends heart and harmony with the singular hope that
soul may be granted, if but momentarily, the gift of speech.”

Notes:
|
- The photographic representations of the "The Garden Serenade Stein,"
which are displayed in various locations throughout this site, were
effected by means of a FujiFilm FinePix 2800 Zoom digital camera with a resolution
setting of 640 x 480 pixels. Although we craved and, therefore, experimented with
higher resolutions, the resulting page load times proved insufferable to all but
the most resolute of our visitors.
