Ford Motorcraft Autolite BRF42 Spark Plugs
With
few exceptions, the Autolite BRF42 was, throughout the 1960s and much of the
1970s, the spark plug of choice of The Ford Motor
Company finding widespread usage in the vast majority of 4, 6, and 8
cylinder engines, including the 122, 221, 240, 260, 289, 302, 351, 352, 390,
406, 427, 428, 429 and 460 CID.
Last produced approximately twenty five years ago
and, therefore, growing increasingly difficult to locate, they are much sought by
collectors of vintage and classic Ford automobiles—particularly the high
performance muscle cars such as the legendary Mustang—who strive to achieve
purity and originality of restoration as well as optimal engine performance.

Comments and Observations:
Born of necessity and in response to the avalanche
of complaints received from baby boomers who failed to appreciate the obstreperous
cacophony of spark plug generated static which tended to render their favorite
Doo Wop tunes unintelligible, the Resistor Spark Plug was first produced by
Autolite in 1949. Not only did this wonderful invention succeed beautifully in
improving radio reception by effectively eliminating the EMI (electromagnetic
interference) and/or RFI (radio frequency interference), it also prolonged
electrode life. Thus, our forebears were no longer forced to hurriedly pull off
the tarmac and imperil their very lives in order to enjoy the latest Buddy Holly
or Elvis opus.
- At the instant the coil induced spark traverses
the measured gap which lies between the two electrodes, a burst of high frequency
energy (an electromagnetic field) is generated. By placing a 5k ohm ceramic
resistor in the spark plug (hence the "R" in BRF42), the EMI/RFI is effectively
suppressed.
- Succinctly expressed, the BRF42 is created by placing a 5K ohm ceramic
resistor in a BF42.
While radio interference is, indeed, an annoyance,
modern vehicles incorporate a plethora of highly sensitive electronic devices that
are absolutely essential to normal operation and safety. The use of non-resistorized
spark plugs could seriously impair the operation of or render inoperative such
critical systems as the diverse onboard computers and GPS system, resulting in
such undesirable anomalies as erratic idle, high-RPM misfire, engine dieseling,
loss of power, abnormal combustion, as well as possible damage to various very
expensive ignition components.
Condition:
We are pleased to be able to make available a

Notes:
|
- The photographic representations of "Ford Motorcraft Autolite BRF42 Spark Plugs," which
are displayed in various locations throughout this site,
were effected by means of a FujiFilm FinePix 2800 Zoom digital camera with a
resolution setting of 640 x 480 pixels. Although we craved and, therefore,
experimented with higher resolutions, the resulting page load times proved
insufferable to all but the most resolute of our visitors.
